My media Consumption

On a daily basis I consume a lot of media products! For example, I'm listening to music on Spotify right now and I do almost all of the time, whether that be when I'm walking at school, at work or doing homework and I spend a lot of my free time catching up with shows on Netflix or watching videos on Youtube. It's easy to not realise how much media we consume these days because it is so simple to consume it, sometimes not even realising that we are doing so if we have it running in the background while doing other tasks. Usually we only have to open an app on our phones to start consuming some kind of media.

Here are some examples of the media that I consume, how I consume It and how it was distributed...

Spotify

My household has a family subscription package of Spotify premium, meaning that we pay a Spotify Inc monthly for an account each. I use the streaming surface mostly on my phone from an app that I downloaded for free from the google play store, but also on my laptop. Occasionally I use the Spotify web player that can be acessesed though Spotify's website. My subscription to Spotify is all online so there was no need to go out and buy a physical product, which is a more convenient way of distribution for consumers such as myself because all you need to access the product is an internet connection.

Netflix

I use Netflix to watch the majority of the TV and Films that I consume and I pay a subscription fee each month to access their wide library of shows and movies. Mostly I use Netflix's website on my laptop, however I also have the Netflix app on my phone that I downloaded for free from the google play store, so I can continue what I was watching on a different device if I need to. Again, to access this product I didn't need to purchase anything physical which is cheaper and more convenient than buying all of the films and series that I wanted to watch in an optical format.

YouTube

On YouTube I can search for and watch videos free of charge, so there was no need to pay for the YouTube app that I have downloaded on my phone from the google play store. It was also free and completely online to create a YouTube account so that I could subscribe to channels and comment on other videos.

Twitter/Instagram

I generally access social media on my phone, but also on my laptop, and this is completely free which out the need to spend any money or leave the house to consume content shared on it. The apps are available from the google play store, free of charge for anyone to download and create an account.

In conclusion, the majority of my media consumption takes place on my smartphone, using apps that I download from the google play store. Its fair to say that I would be lost with out it! This means that a lot of devices that people would have needed to consume media products such as music, films, TV shows, magazines and radio have converged into one device.
